Germany's first Nuke Site License Print E-mail
nuke24The PICTORION das werk Group has successfully placed a contract with The Foundry and DVE Digital Video & Effects GmbH for a Nuke Site License.

“We decided to implement Nuke as the new desktop compositing software, as it fits perfectly into our VFX Pipeline and seems to be the ideal solution for 3D Compositing
and stereoscopy.
Our feature film work, and also advertising projects, will benefit from the faster, easier Nuke software and we are very happy to increase our collaboration with The Foundry.” says Jörg Brümmer, Head of Compositing, PICTORION das werk.

3D-DCP of Trailers from „Same Same but Different“ Print E-mail
3d-dcpWe are pleased to announce that have created the first 3D-DCP.

We created 50 copies of the 3D trailer for „Same Same but Different“ from the Boje Buck Produktion and we are now sending them on USB flash drives to individual cinemas.  The flash drives were formatted at the same time, recorded fully automated by script, and checked three times by checksum so that we could eliminate any errors while copying.

The trailer will be shown in almost all movie theaters with the 3D version of „Avatar.“  We congratulate the production on getting such an honored trailer spot and look forward to the 2D premiere on 21 January 2010!

Additionally the SCANNING, GRADING, RECORDING of the film were done at our company.

Now we have completed the tasks from the DI on the DCDM creation of „Palermo Shooting“ to the DCP creation of „Zweiohrküken,“ as well as key generation and stereo-DCP tests for „Pina Bausch“ and the 3D-DCP creation and sending to the individual movie theaters.  We look forward to having new advertising and film projects.

ADC in Stereo Print E-mail
adcAs part of this year‘s ADCs, PICTORION das werk and WerbeWeischer invite you to a get-together in the spectacular Astor Filmlounge on the Ku-Damm.  As a prelude to a wild party night, Wolf Bosse and Stefan Albertz from das werk, along with Florian Weischer from WerbeWeischer will be leading an enthralling program about stereo 3D film.

Cinema is the playground for creativity.  It is fascinating in picture, sound, and experience.  The renaissance of stereo 3D movies in the USA has also taken theaters here by storm and as a result brings new possbilities to really pack target audiences.  However, it is currently still exclusive to feature films, especially documentaries and concert recordings.

The World in 3D Stereo Print E-mail
stereoCurrently cinema in the United States is experiencing an exciting rebirth of stereo 3D films; the 3D versions of films like Disney‘s „Bolt“ or the remake of „Journey to the Center of the Earth“ have broken attendance records and Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of Dreamworks, simply predicts, „3D is the future!“

With this current topic in mind, the third road show is making the rounds through all of the offices at PICTORION das werk.  Together with playback and grading specialist Patrick J. Palmer from Iridas, our 3D department was able to give enthusiastic audiences a better understanding of the subject.

A highly entertaining program took audiences through the historical and economic background of 3D stereoscopy, the technical requirements, the psychological effects, and of course the practical implementation of the technology.

On the other hand, the practical test provoked an extremely different reaction; it was the first time that our clients let out screams of fear in a workshop!

Because of its extraordinary popularity, our road show is now a permanent fixture at PICTORION das werk.  We offer quarterly talks about the latest topics in the field of digital imaging and on request, as an in-house training session directly at the client‘s office.

Workshop at PICTORION das werk: table top and liquid animation Print E-mail
thumb_18Over the past years dynamic liquid simulation has reached a new quality level due to tremendous advances in software.
Liquids and liquid effects can be created more realistically than ever before.
The key advantage of computer generated (CG) fluids is, that they are manageable up to the ultimate level detail, which provides for an unprecedented level of freedom for creative labour.

For this reason, we have developed a workshop series, where we begin with an overview of the advantages of photorealistic 3D pack shots in comparison to pack shots, filmed the conventional way.
Our 3D artist Tobias Becker will explain these advantages with current examples.
Our 3D artists Christian Laskawi and Florian Koebisch, two experts in the field of fluid simulation, will also provide you with in-depth insight into this fascinating world of 3D animation. Our artists are official “Xperts” in the Hollywood-approved fluid simulation software RealFlow and they will illuminate the working processes and intricacies in dealing with CG fluids.

After the workshop, you should be able to decide, whether the adoption of computer generated fluids makes more sense or not with respect to your individual needs.

If you are interested in attending one of our workshops, please write an e-mail to the following address:

VFX production for the film "Die Frau des Anarchisten" Print E-mail
die_frau_des_anarchisten_plakat_1PICTORION das werk is proud to have been selected as the visual effects producer of the “Die Frau des Anarchisten“. The film by Marie Noelle and Peter Sehr tells the story of Marie Noelles grandmother in times of the Spanish Civil War.

The film was shot in 35mm film in Germany, Spain and France, where on the set the crew and cast were communicating in 5 different languages.

Sebastian Weidner, 3D artist at PICTORION das werk, set supervisor accompanied the production at several locations: Madrid, Barcelona and Annonay (France).

For one shot he was privileged to meet the legendary miniature model legend, Emilio Ruiz del Rio who has been involved in countless top class films since the fifties. For “Die Frau des Anarchisten” he built his last model, a house facade, ruined by a bomb attack. The effect is so unbelievable you should take a closer look at the pictures. Unfortunately Emilio died of cancer just after the shooting.

But there is a lot more to the VFX work of PICTORION das werk: The subsequent adaptation comprised a total of 70 effect settings, each requiring precise planning, preparation and execution. To do this, an in-house produced “motion picture workflow” developed by Joerg Bruemmer, head of compositing at PICTORION das werk and his team was used...

HILDE "VISUAL EFFECTS" Print E-mail

hilde_vfx_breakdownWe’re glad to present to you some VFX shots of our latest feature film project “Hilde”, which you can find in the category “VFX BREAKDOWNS”.

You can find a selection of different set extensions like the destroyed Berlin in the German forties, as well as Hollywood at that time.
We recreated film studios and concert halls digitally, by means of a.o. crowd duplication. Furthermore, we let 3D planes take off in a real shot environment.

You can look at the VFX shots interactively via the "before and after" slider.

HILDE Print E-mail

hildeAfter successfully finishing the shoot of the new Egoli Tossel (directed by Kai Wessel) movie 'Hilde' in Magdeburg and Berlin, the production focus was shifting towards postproduction. PICTORION Ruhrsound was responsible for the sound recordings and PICTORION das werk for all VFX shots and the DI.

After a long search for financers, the movie could finally be shot. It is reflecting Hildgard Knef's life in the years between 1944 and 1966. Heike Makatsch took Knef’s part in the 10 Mio Euros budget movie. To master the challenge of portraying an icon like Hildegard Knef, Makatsch took singing lessons for more then one year in order to be able to authentically sing all the songs.

The movie which is strongly based on the bestseller ‘The gift horse’ by Knef herself was mainly shot in Magdeburg, although the story mostly takes place in Berlin. Located in the center of Berlin, it became difficult to shoot historically correct locations 'Prenzlauer Berg' and 'Mitte'. Kai Wessel: „In Magdeburg, things still look more like a war scenario“. Nevertheless, the production spent three weeks in Berlin, shooting several parts of the movie in famous locations like Schillertheater, Philharmonie and the shut down airport Tempelhof.

The DI for 'Hilde' was spread over the PICTORION das werk group. Imagica Scanners were used to scan the whole project in a 2K resolution. Our grading artist for 'Hilde' Moritz Peters was using a RESOLVE RT System with a Barco DP90P Projector. The movie 'Hilde' had more than 40 VFX shots (3D Airplanes, set extensions, crowd duplications, matte paintings, destroyed Berlin,...) which were all successfully created by PICTORION das werk.
